The 35th edition of the Anaheim Lions Tournament will have 46 High School teams taking part, a far cry from the beginning in 1975 when a mere eight teams participated. The first Lions Tournament Champion - Savanna High School in Anaheim included major leaguer Glenn Hoffman who was a junior on the team. In 2008, 46 High schools sent their baseball teams to Anaheim to compete in one of the most prestigious state wide high school tournaments, including the defending high school National Champions, Long Beach Wilson, who incidentally did not win the Lions tournament that year. This year, teams as far away as Merced and Reno, Nevada will come to town over spring break to show their skills. Last year’s tournament was a great success with the finals held between nationally ranked Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and Valencia (Placentia). Mater Dei won the championship game, 8 – 5 to claim their first Lions Tournament championship in their second year of participation. Please, plan on coming out and supporting all of the high school baseball teams in this year’s 35th Anaheim Lions Tournament.
